Bougainville

The Spirit of the Great Travellers

Famous 18th century French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville epitomised the essential values of the rums that proudly bear his name today.  Commissioned by the French government to circle the earth in voyage of exploration, Bougainville put set out to sea in December 1766, accompanied by naturalists and other scientists. During the course of his voyage, he set down in Isle de France, now known as Mauritius, in November 1768. Back in France in 1769, he wrote his famous account, A Voyage round the World.

Spirit of Mauritius

Crystal clear lagoons, sandy beaches, warm and friendly inhabitants and of course local Rum! In Mauritius, rum production is closely linked to that of Sugar. Sugarcane was first introduced on the island by the Dutch in 1638. However it was during the French and British administration that sugar production was fully exploited and Pierre Charles Francios Harel became the first to propose the concept of local distillation of rum in Mauritius. Rum is consumed by many people and you can enjoy the finest rum in cocktails and restaurants  hotels and even at home.
